The East Los Angeles Civic Center Plaza is one of a few commercial developments in the East Los Angeles community. It provides much needed amenities to the surrounding areas and includes both retail and food establishments as well as private office spaces. This project was vital in giving the neighborhood a sense of pride by providing a clean and contemporary space where the nearby residents can gather.
The composition of the five buildings that comprise this project solved the problems of the ‘typical strip mall’ design. It tucked parking in the rear of the lot, and allowed some of the buildings to move forward and cater to pedestrian traffic. The parking then weaves in and out between the buildings and creates a commercial ‘plaza’ that is enhanced by a large open courtyard at the center of the project and abundant landscaping throughout.
